ABOUT JOHNNY HOHLWEG

My fishing journey started as a young child 6 years old when my dad would take me with him on occasion. He would fish for carp behind three rods and I would fish a waggler for anything that swam! I was instantly ‘hooked’ and fished for all sorts of freshwater fish up until the age of 12. I developed a liking for the competition side of angling and joined a local angling club where I would compete in matches as a young teenager. I learned a great deal from the more experienced anglers. This really helped me to improve and progress forward to bigger competitions.

In my late teens I moved to Oxfordshire and fishing kind of took a back seat for a little while as I established my working career.

In 2003, My mother and step-father bought a plot of land with the intention of building a home and viable business as a day ticket fishery. I helped with digging the lakes, stocking, and running the matches. I competed to a fairly high level for a number of years, winning the Anglers Mail County Championships twice in consecutive years!

I found myself concentrating more on winning than actually fishing which led to me losing interest in the competition side. I felt I wanted to get back to just going fishing for myself and not get embroiled in the ‘politics’ that came with it.

In turn, roughly 8 years ago, I decided to switch over to Carp fishing. I found a new love for the sport and thrived on trying to catch Specimen fish, particularly carp. I also found that this was a perfect escape for me from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. No pressure to perform just me, the lake, and the countryside – with a chance of a nice Carp or two!

Now living back in the southwest, I find myself fishing smaller tricky waters as this is what fires up my passion for the sport. I am also a member of a private syndicate which is where I love to spend a lot of my spare time. I get a lot of satisfaction from targeting a particular group of fish on a lake, or maybe just a single fish. I love to ‘hatch’ a plan and put it into action.

I first met Mat a couple of years ago when buying some fishing tackle. We got talking as anglers do and he mentioned he was starting up Max Attract Baits. His passion and the way he would ‘light’ up when talking about it really made me want to get involved. His knowledge about bait and general carp fishing really helped me learn a lot too. I love the company ethos #nocompromise and wanted to use bait that had quality ingredients and was beneficial to the fish.

I’ve been using Max Attract baits for about 18 months now and in this time I have caught numerous carp from the UK and France. I have total confidence in the range and would happily take the bait anywhere.
